Obituary

Louie Edward Scare, of Mendon, Michigan, passed away on October 8, 2026, at his home. He was born on November 8, 1934, in Hillshire Township, Ohio, to Edward and Helen (Germann) Scare.

Louie served his country in the United States Army from 1957 to 1960. After his honorable discharge, he attended Centreville High School and earned his diploma. On July 12, 1960, he married LaVelle Harrell in Weatherford, Texas, beginning a marriage that remained at the center of his life. Since 1962, he was a resident of Colon, where he built a life grounded in family, hard work, and community.

A dedicated worker, Louie spent 40 years at Lear Corp. in Mendon, retiring in 1997. Alongside his years there, he also farmed for 32 years, growing vegetables and raising hogs and cattle. Farming was more than work to him; it was part of the conversation and rhythm of his life, and he always enjoyed a good talk about it.

Louie found happiness in simple and meaningful pursuits. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, tinkering with things, garage sales and auctions, and, most of all, time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered as a man who valued work, family, and the satisfaction of making and fixing things with his own hands.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, LaVelle Scare; his daughters, Vickie (Ardi) Eichorn, Dixie (Tom) Earl, and Cindy Scare; and his sons, Rex (Kari) Scare and Scott Scare and daughter in law Tammy Wood widow of Victor. He is also survived by his brothers Henry (Shirley) Scare, Paul (Phyllis) Scare and John Scare; his sisters Anna (Bob) Wilson, Agnes Storms, and Mary (James) Craaybeek. His family circle also includes 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom carry forward his memory and the example of a life well lived.

He was preceded in death by his son, Victor Scare; his infant daughter, Robin Scare; his brothers Walter Scare, Adolph Scare, and Herbert Scare; and his sisters Esther Gallmeyer and Erma Mecklenberg.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Schipper Funeral Home Ltd, 308 S. Blackstone Ave., Colon, Michigan and again from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the service. The funeral service will take place on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Schipper Funeral Home Ltd. Interment will also be held on October 15, 2026 in Lakeside Cemetery in Colon. In lieu of flowers the family asks memorial donations to be made to Three Rivers Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Louie Edward Scare leaves behind a legacy of devotion to his family, pride in his work, and a deep connection to the land and the life he built. He will be remembered with love, gratitude, and lasting respect.
