Gerald (Jerry) Collier Gilbert age 76, of Colon, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, August 4, 2025 leaving his family and friends in shock and sorrow. Though his passing was sudden, his life was filled with purpose, joy and love.

Jerry was born on July 12, 1949, in Three Rivers, the beloved son of the late Leon Gilbert and Jean (Dunck) Pastirko.

He married Denise Maritt on June 14, 1973, and together they built their life in Colon rooted in love.

A man of quiet strength and steady devotion, Jerry was known for his deep love of the outdoors. He found peace in woodworking, took pride in hunting, and found joy in fishing. For the past 16 years, he made an annual trip to Minnesota with his sons and close friends – a cherished tradition filled with early mornings, tall tales, and unforgettable moments on the water. In recent years some of his greatest joy came from traveling with his wife and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He cherished those moments deeply and was most content surrounded by the people he loved.

He worked as a press mechanic in the can plant at Ross Products Division (Abbott Laboratories) from 1981 until he retired in 2004. Prior to that he worked for a few trailer factories. From 1971 to 1973, Jerry proudly served in the United State Army, answering the call of duty with courage and quiet dignity.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Denise, daughter Camille Wilson, sons Cory (Mia) Gilbert, Matthew (Mandy) Gilbert. Joseph (Nina) Woolford. Grandchildren Sierra Gilbert, Fern Gilbert, Dane Wilson, Elizabeth Gilbert, Trinity Gilbert, Robert Jones, Katelyn Jones and Emily Jones all of whom carry a part of his spirit forward. He is preceded in death by his parents Leon Gilbert and Jean Pastirko, stepfather Joseph Pastirko, a brother Thomas Gilbert and a niece Juli Woolford.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, August 7, 2025, from 4-6pm at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD in Colon, with a memorial service taking place at 6pm with Cory C. Gilbert officiating.

If desired the family suggest memorials be made in memory of Jerry to Leonidas Township Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home. Private interment of ashes will take place at a later date.
