Charles Edward Nightingale, born April 4, 1933, in Comstock, Michigan, passed away peacefully at his home under hospice care on May 6, 2026. A devoted family man and respected member of his community, Charles was a lifelong resident of the area he loved.
Charles graduated from Athens High School with the class of 1951. Shortly after, on June 21, 1952, he married Mary Ann Hammond at Factoryville Bible Church, marking the beginning of a long and loving partnership. Mary Ann preceded him in death on September 27, 2013.
Throughout his working years, Charles was a skilled sheet metal worker and a proud member of Union Local 360. Beyond his profession, he was deeply committed to his faith and community. Charles was a lifelong member of Factoryville Bible Church and dedicated himself as a Word of Life leader from 1969 to 2010. His passion for music and singing enriched the lives of those around him.
Charles's generosity extended beyond his immediate family. For 44 years, he and Mary Ann served as foster parents to the Copas family—Evelyn, Rosetta, and Ray—offering love and support that left a lasting impact.
He cherished his role as a grandfather and took great pride in attending every event involving his grandchildren. His love for life included a fondness for the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, and the University of Michigan. Charles was also known for his deep patriotism.
Charles is survived by his children: Cynthia “Cindy” (Dwight) Hostetler of Sturgis, Cathy (David) Mostrom of Sturgis, and Chris (Renee) Nightingale of Colon; his daughter-in-law Debrah Nightingale; his sister Carole Foster of Kalamazoo; 37 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren, with two more expected very soon; and three great-great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. He leaves behind several nieces and nephews as well.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Ann Nightingale, his brother Joseph R. Nightingale, his sister Beverly Nightingale, his son David Nightingale, and daughter-in-law Cheri Nightingale.
Friends and family are invited to honor Charles’s memory with a visitation at Factoryville Bible Church, 1291 Factoryville Road, Athens, Michigan 49011, on May 16, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the same location on May 17, 2026, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at North Sherwood Cemetery, 1070 Mendon Road, Sherwood, at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be directed to Factoryville Bible Church.
